Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1906.
Application filed March 19, 1906. Serial No. 306,863.
7 To an whom it may concern;
. the invention.
Be it known that I, IRA I. SIDEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeley, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Combined Ruler and Blotter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an article of stationery and the principal object is to provide a novel, simple, and useful article 0 manufacture that is capable of being employed in a variety of ways and for a number of different purposes. a
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of Fi 2 is a longitudinal sectional view throug the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of construction. Fi 5'is a detail sectional view therethrough. 6 is still another embodiment of the invention, showing different means for fastenin the blotter to the body; Fig. 7 is a detai sectionalview therethrough. Fig. 8 is'a detail lan view illustrating still another form of astener, and Fig. 9 is a detail sectional view therethrough.
Similar reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the embodiment illustrated in the first three figures, -a ruler is employed that is in the form of a body 10, composed of sheet material of any desired character, said body having op osite longitudinal and parallel edges 11 an 12. The edge 12 is shorter than the edge 11. the body comprises straight portions 13 and 14, disposed in angular relation, the ortion 14 being located at an acute angle to the edge 11 andthe'portion 13 being disposed at an obtuse angle to the longitudinal edge 12. As
. a result a pointed corner 15 is formed at one end of the body. The other end edge comprises a portion. 16,'disposed at right angles to offset from the portion 16 and connects with the other edge 12, forming a point 18. The
' margins inside said various edges are provided Mlth scales 19 conferming to the said edges. Upon the upper or exposed faceof the body and in-the upper portion thereof is placed a calendar, (designated by the reference-numeral --20.) Anopen space 21 is left below calendar, in which suitable advertising may be printedor otherwise placed.
contiguous to the binding.
be made to perform its ordinary functions,
-the rule One of the end edges of Secured to the under side of the body is a blotter 22 which terminates short of the various edges above described and is held in place by anysuitable means. For instance, if the body is made of metal or other bendable material, lips 23 may be cut from the material of the body and engage over the edges of the blotter, as shown. Instead of this structure wire sta les 24 may be employed, which, as shown in igs. 6 and 7, are passed through the body and through the blotter-pad 22, or, ifit is-desired, pronged headed fasteners '25 may be employed, which, as illustrated in Fi s. 8 and 9, are passed through the body 1.0
and the blotter 22.
The structure may be employed in a number of ways. By having the edges disposed at different angles about the body a number of angles can be drawn. Furthermore, the
sharpv corners permit the ruling of lines in confined places, such as on the pages of books The blotter may but, furthermore, supports the body above the surface and provides overhanging ruling edges, as will be apparent. In this latter connection not only are the ruling ed es provided, but the blotter located inside t e same will absorb any ink that may flow in from such ed es and which would otherwise blot surface. I The structure disclosed in Figs. 4 and 5 has substantially the same characteristics as the embodiment already set forth. A body 10 is employed having parallel longitudinal edges 11% and an end edge consisting of angularly-dispos'ed portions 12 and 13". The other end edge has a portion 14* disposed at right angles to one of the longitudinal edges and a curved portion coacting with the other longitudinal edge. Scales 16 extend around the margins of the body, and a calendar 17 maybe located in the up or portion thereof, leaving a space 18, on which. advertising matter may be displayed. The blotter 19 is held in place .on the under side of the body by lips cut from the material of the body and passed through openings 21 in the blotter, as illustrated in Fig. 5.
v The advantages of my invention will beapparent when it is ex lained that by its use the bookkeeper has vefore him a calendar, a ruler, a blotter, all in one, the article being flexible, so as to conform to the curvature of thewritin -page. The straight portion 16 enables a ookkeeper to rule up his ledger Q, 82am without moving the rule. Indeed he can rule the book at almost any angle by using the different edges of the body. The projecting-point 18 can be used as a letteropener. l
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be a parent to those skilled in the art Without Further description, and it will be'understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention,
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 2. A blotter comprising a body having parallel longitudinal straight ed es, and an end edge at one end of the body aving portions located at different angles, and an end edge at the other end of the bed having a curved portion, and scales locate along the margins of the body and'coacting with the said edges thereof.
3. In a device of the class described,.a
'fiexibleruler having its body provided with continuous longitudinal strai ht edges extending from end to end, and an end edge having portions thereof disposed at diflerent aggles to each other: and to the longitudinal e ges.
4. In adevice of the class described, a
ruler having its body provided with continuous longitudinal straight edges extendin from end to end, and end edges, each of sai end edges comprising portions located in angular relation to each other, said portionsbeing dis osed at, different angles to the longitudina edges. v
5. In a device of the class described, the ruler havin its body provided with longitudinal straig t edges, and an end edge provided with a straight portion extending from one of the longitudinal edges and a curved ortion terminating in a point at the other ongitudinal edge, the inner end of the curved portion being located outside theinner end of I a the straight portion.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afl'ixedmy signature in the presence of twov witnesses.
IRA. I. SIDES.
