UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT w. BURNS, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
COMBINED PAPER AND ENVELOPE TABLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,830, dated March 19, 1889. Application filed December 6, 1888. Serial No. 292,778. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern.-
Be` it known that I, ROBERT WV. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dayton, county of Montgomery, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Paper and Envelope Tablet, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has for its object to provide a package of writing-paper and envelopes of a form most convenient for handling and rapid use; and it consists in the construction hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, like letters referring to like parts throughout, Figure l is a plan view with part of the top broken away, and Eig. 2 an edge View of my invention.
A is a backing of paper-board or other equivalent stiff material.
B is a body of writing-paper, secured to the backing A in any suitable way.
C is a backing similar to A, but slightly wider.
D D &c., are a series of envelopes detachably connected in any suitable way to the backing C along one of their margins, overlapping and breaking joints with each other. To secure this result the rst envelope D is attached to the backing C at a point from its inner end equal to or greater than the width of the envelopes. The next envelope is attached to the backing at a point slightly re moved toward its outer end. Each successive envelope is attached in the same way, so that the envelopes overlap and their upper margins break joints with each other. The series, when completed, all lie at an incline to the backing C with their faces toward the outer end.
E is a top or cover, preferably composed of blotting material.
F is a flexible binding or connect-ion unit ing the backing A and C and the top E at their inner ends.
The use of the package is evident. The top being thrown back, the envelopes are exposed in the most convenient position foraddross ing. On then throwing back the envelopepad the writing-paper is exposed. The envel- 5o opes are detached from the backing as used.
I secure the envelopes to the backing by any suitable adhesive material.
It will be readily understood that instead of attaching them directly to the backing they 5 5 might be attached to a thin sheet of cloth or paper, which in turn is fastened to the backing. It will be equally understood that any other suitable means than adhesive material may be used to effect the detachable eonnec 6o tion of the envelopes to the backing.
If so desired, the back C may be made of blotting material similar to the top E.
VlIat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows: l. A combined paper and envelope tablet consisting, essentially, of a body of writingpaper secured to a suitable base-board or backing, a series of envelopes overlapping and breaking joints with each other, secured To a 7o suitable base-board or backing, and a flexible connection uniting said base-boards, substantially as described.
2. A combined paper and envelope tablet consisting of a body of writing-paper secured to a base-board or backing, a series of envelopes overlapping and breaking joints with each other, secured on one margin to a baseboard or backing, a top board or cover, and a ieXible connection uniting said base-boards 8o and cover at one of their corresponding edges.
3. The combination paper and envelope tablet herein described, consisting of the paper base-board, the body of writing-paper secured thereto, the envelope base-board of 8 5 greater width than the paper base-board, the series of envelopes overlappin g and breaking joints with each other detachably connected thereto on one margin, the blotter top, and the Iiexible connection uniting said base- 9o boards and top at their inner ends, substantially as described.
ROBERT IV. BURNS.
In presence of` WILLIAM B. SULLIVAN, E. E. RIOE.
