UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER LONG, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES M. COOK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LINING AND PACKING PAPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,531, dated October 30, 1877 application filed April 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLIVER LONG, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful a perspective view of a stair-pad embodying my improvement.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved lining or packing paper for use as an under lining for carpets, for stair-pads, or for a packing in any suitable manner for fragile articles.
My invention consists, essentially, of a packing or lining, composed of paper or like material, covered on one or both sides with granulated cork, attached to the paper by glue or other adhesive means.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, ,A represents a sheet of paper, to one or both sides of which is applied granulated or broken cork, caused to adhere to the latter by the application of a coat of glue or other adhesive matter.
In some cases moderately stifi card-board or pasteboard may be substituted for paper.
For stair-pads I attach the elastic-surfaced material thus made to unsized felted or other paper or card, the edges of two materials thereof, C C, being bound by strips of paper or cloth a, the elastic-surfaced paper being so folded that the cork or other elastic surfaces shall be adjacent and meet together, as shown in Fig. 2.
I prefer to use felt or pulp paper, as more perfectly securing a noiseless tread.
The uses to which it may be applied as a packing it is not necessary to detail, it being to form a lining or packing paper, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
Witnesses: OLIVER LONG.
