UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV'ADOLPH EARTH, or STAPLETON, NEW YORK.
DUPLEX WAFER.
SPEGILFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,065, dated April '29, 1902. Application filed June-18,1901l Serial No. 65,021. (N0 model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV AD OLPH EARTH, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of the city of New York, (Stapleton, borough of Richmond,) in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplex Wafers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to paper-fasteners; and its object is to provide a new and improved duplex wafer more especially designed for conveniently and quickly fastening two sheets of paper together and arranged to permit of conveniently separating the sheets without danger of tearing or otherwise mutilating the same. The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practicalembodiment of the invention is represented inthe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate cor responding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied to a statement of account and an affidavit therefor. Fig. 2 is an enlarged face view of the improvement, and Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation of the same.
The duplex wafer is preferably made in disk form, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and consists, essentially, of a many-ply body made of two or more layers A A, of paper or other suitable material, with the layers fastened together inthe usual manner when making the body. Thefaoes of the body are coated or covered with coatings B and B of an adhesive substance, such as may be seen in Fig. 3.
In order to use the wafer for fastening two sheets of paper 0 and D together, for instance, it is only necessary to moisten the coatings and then apply the wafer with one face to one to cause the wafer to firmly adhere to both sheets, and thereby securely fasten the sheets sheets of paper for any reason or purpose whatever,it is only necessary to pull the sheets apart, so that the body of the wafer separates along the division-lines of the plies or layers A A, and consequently one ply With its coating will-adhere to one sheet and the other ply with its coating remains with the other sheet.
It is expressly understood that by the arrangement described it is not necessary to moisten the sheets or the wafer whenever it is desired to separate the sheets, as the pull exerted on the sheets is sufficient to separate the body of the wafer along the separating line of the layers A and A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. As an article of manufacture, a com-5 posite wafer, built up of separate sheets of material secured together, said wafer having its upper and lower faces provided with coat ings of an adhesive, the adhesion between the sheets and coatingsof adhesive being stronger than that between the layers.
2. As an article of manufacture, a composite wafer built of separate sheets of ma terial detachably secured together so as to be] readily pulled asunder, the top and bottom sheets of said wafer being coated externally with an adhesive of great strength for permanently securing substances thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
