. To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTON DUANE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prophetstown, in the county of W'hiteside and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Sample-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

and it has for its object to provide a new and [O useful device of that character employed for the purpose of fastening or attaching samples to boxes, drawers, packages," and the like, which contain or hold duplicates of the sample exhibited. To this end the main and pri- 1 5 mary object of thejpresent invention is to providea simple, inexpensive, and eflicient fastener or holder for samples that can be quickly and readily secured to the exterior of a box,

, drawer, package and the like without the bor- 2o ing of holes, the use of nails or screws or other separate means which deface the receptacle to which the device is attached or are inconvenient to use, especially where it is neces-- s'ary to drill holes in the box or other receptacle and remove or disarrange the contents thereof in order to facilitate the attachment of the fasteneror holder as in some constructions. lVhile obviating these difficulties and disadvantages, the herein-described device at 0 the same time will securely and removably support or hold in position small wares or articles of hardware, harness, furniture, fixtures, &c.

With these and other objects in view, which 3 5 will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described,illustrated and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates an adhesive paster provided upon one side with gum or other suitable adhesive coating 2, which when dampened will adhere to any object to which the paster may be attached, and when driedprovides means for securely fastening the pastor at allof its edges in place on the exterior of such object which,

as shown in the drawings, may be a box, drawer, or other receptacle that contains goods, or wares, a sample of which is ordinarily exhibited on the outside thereof. The said adhesive paster 1, may be cut in any desired shape, such as in disk form, rectangular, oblong and the like, or'rnaybe cut ornamentally as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, in which figures the paster is shown 8 5 respectively as diamond shaped and circular with scalloped edges, but the form of the paster is unimportant inasmuch as the same may be varied to suit the trade and the character of the wares and articles to be supported 0 thereby.

The material of which the adhesive paster 1, is usually made, is a suitable thickness of paper, but it will of'course be understood tha't'the same may be made of cloth, leather, 5 or other suitable material adapted for the purpose, and the said paster is provided with a pair of string eyesor perforations 3, through which are adapted to be passed the opposite portions of a-tying string, tape, cord or wire I00 4. The string 'or wire 4, whichever the same may be, is strung through the pair of eyes 3,

in the paster before the same is pasted onto the exterior of a box or other object, and the free ends of the string or Wire are extended beyond the ungummed side of the paster, so that when the same is placed in position it is simply necessary to tie the free ends of the string or wire around the ware or article to be displayed on the exterior of a box or other receptacle, and such ware or article will be firmly and securely supported in position, while at the same time being capable of being easily removed and replaced.

In order to prevent the tearing out of the material of which the paster is composed between the string eyes or perforations therein, a reinforcing piece 5, is secured by gums or other suitable means to the ungummed side of the paster directly over the holes or perforations therein, and is provided with holes or perforations G, registering with those in the paster. The reinforcing piece 5, may consist of a stout disk of paper or other suitable material such as illustrated in the drawings, and together with the body of the paster itself provides a strong stifi portion for the tying string or wire to pass through, to effectually prevent a tearing out of the material between the string holes or perforations.

WVhile the ordinary form of paster has been described, with a single pair of string holes or perforations therein, it will be understood that the paster may be elongated as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and provided with two separate pairs of holes or perforations, which are conveniently reinforced by a reinforcing piece or strip 5, extending the entire length of the paster, but subserving the same function as the reinforcing piece already described.

In employing a wire string, the construction of paster used in connection therewith is shown in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings. This form of the paster must be exceptionally strongat the point where the wire passes through the holes or perforations therein,and to provide for this a metallic reinforcing piece or plate 7, is interposed between the duplicate layers of paper or other material of which the paster is composed, and said metallic reinforcing piece or plate is also provided with openings or perforations aligning with those in the body of the paster itself. By this construction of paster it will be seen that the wire string, which may be additionally designated as 4, may be tied around the ware or article to be. exhibited as tight as desired without the possibility of tearing out the material of the paster between the holes or perforations therein.

From the above it will be seen that the essential feature of the invention resides in the construction of the paster wi th the string holes or perforations therein, and it will be under stood that the strings or wires may or may not be furnished therewith as a part of the completed article, and in the event of supplying strings or tapes with the pastors the former are preferably waxed so that the same can be easily tied in position in the pastors and also to insure the tight tying thereof around the wares or articles. The pasters themselves may be made in any suitable manner, and may be supplied to the trade in sheets or blanks 8, as illustrated in Fig. 10 of the drawings, in which the pasters are separated by perforated tear lines 9, while in Fig. 11 of the drawings the pasters are shown as rolled into a bolt 10, but other means of forming and selling the paster may be carried out.

Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A sample holder consisting of a flexible paster, the body of which is provided with a plain attaching side flat throughoutits entire area and having thereon an adhesive coating to provide for securing the paster at all of its edges to a box or the like, and holes or perforations formed in said body for the reception of a flexible tie, substantially as set forth.

2. A sample holder consisting of a flexible laminated paster, the body of which is provided with a pair of string holes or perfora tions, and with a plain attaching side flat throughout its entire area and having thereon an adhesive coating, a metallic reinforcing plate secured between the layers of the laminated paster body and provided with similar holes or perforations, and a flexible tie wire, substantially as set forth.

3. A sample holder consisting of a flexible paster, the body of which is provided with a plain attaching side flat throughout its entire area and having thereon an adhesive coating to provide for securing the pastor at all of its edges to a box or the like, said paster body being further provided with a pair of eyes for.
