UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTON DUANE SMITI-I, OF PROPHETSTOWN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIALF TO FRED I.. ADAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,843, dated March 16, 1897. Application led December 5, 1895. Serial No. 571,193. (No model.)
To all whom it nea/y concern.:
Be it known that I, WALTONDUANE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing vat Prophetstowmin the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Sample-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sample-holders; and it has for its object to effect certain improvements in sample-holders of the character set forth in my former patents, Nos. 539,55i and 540,940.
To this end the invention contemplates4 a simple and efficient sample-holder that can be readily affixed to boxes, drawers, or the like to provide efficient means for securely and temporarily holding in position on the exterior of the box or the like samples of small wares, such as articles of hardware, harnesstrimmings, furniture fixtures, dac.
lVith these and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is an end view of abox, showing the improved sample-holder affixed thereto and holding in position an article ofcutlery. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the obverse side of a sample-holder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the reverse or gummed side of the holder. Fig. 4. is an elevation of a modified form of the holder. Fig. 5 is an elevation of a strip or card of holders of the form illustrated in Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numerald designates a flexible adhesive paster that is made of any suitable fiexible material and is out in any desired shape or form, such as oblong or circular,as illustrated, respectively, in Figs. 2 and 4. of the drawings.
The said flexible paster l is provided with a plain attaching side 2, that is flat throughout its entire area and is coated with gum or other suitable adhesive material, which when dampened will adhere to any obj ect to which the paster may be attached, andwhen dried provides means for securely fastening the body of the paster at all of its edges on the exterior of the box or other receptacle containing goods or wares, a sample of which is ordinarily exhibited on the outside of said box or receptacle.
The iiexible paster l is preferably strengthened on its obverse side by a centrally-disposed reinforcing strip or piece 3, usually made of the saine flexible material as the paster-body, and which is gummed or othergummed side of the paster-body.
In the present invention the paster-body is provided at opposite sides of the reinforcing strip or piece 3 and in directly opposite edges with rentrant cuts or notches 4, which are preferably and conveniently made in a V shape and which form eyes extending to the edges of the reinforcing-strip and adapted to receive the opposite portions of the iiexible tie 5. The exible tie 5 may consist of a suitable length of string, cord, or Wire, and when in position the intermediate portion of the said tie is disposed at the rear or gummed side of the paster-body, so that when said pasterbody is aliixed to the box or other receptacle the tie will be held securely fastened in place between such box or receptacle and the paster-body. lVith the paster-body affixed to the box or other receptacle, as just described, it will be noted that the exible tie will be held at an intermediate point, so as to bind against the edges of the reinforcing-strip, thereby leaving both ends of the tie free to be tied over the sample to be exhibited, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings, and when the sample is thus secured in position it will be noted that the same can be readily removed and replaced by simply untying and retying the ends of the flexible tie.
While the essential feature of the present invention is the formation of eyes for the opposite portions of the tie by providing the paster-body in its opposite edges with rentrant cuts or notches, it will be noted that the holders may be very conveniently constructed and assembled in a long strip or card, as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. In this figure of the drawings a series of the holders is illustrated as joined together by a continuous strip or piece which forms the reinforcingstrip 3 for each of the holders, and when it is desired to separate the holders the said continuous strip is cut or severed at the point 6 wise suitable secured to the obverse un- IOO between the holders, but it will of course be understood that it is unimportant, as far as the present invention is concerned, as to how the holders may be arranged for retailing purposes.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention,-What is claimed, and desired to be secured by Let A ters Patent, is
l. A sample-holder consisting of a iieXible paster, the body of which is provided with a plain attaching side flat throughout its entire area and having thereon an adhesive coating, and a reinforcing-strip on its obverse side, said paster-body being also provided in directly opposite edges with open rentrant cuts or notches forming eyes extending to the edges of said reinforcing-strip, and a flexible tie passed around the gunnned side of the pasterbody and lying Within the eyes so as to bind against the edges of said strip, substantially as set forth.
2. As an article of manufacture, a card of sample-holders comprising a plurality of lexible pasters arranged end to end in longitudinal alinement, the body of each paster being provided With a plain attaching side flat throughout its entire area and having thereon an adhesive coating, a single continuous reinforcing-strip connecting the entire series of leXible pasters and attached to the obverse side thereof, each of said paster-bodies being further provided in directly opposite edges with open rentrant cuts or notches forming eyes extending to the edges of said strip, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the' foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
VVALTON DUANE SMITH.
