ORTON O. LITTLE, OF MENASHA, \VISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE 0. O. LITTLE & M. M. SCHOETZ PULLEY COATING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 586,386, dated July 13, 1897. Application filed April 5, 1897. Serial No. 630,776. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORTON G. LITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menasha, in the county of lVinnebago and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sample-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a sample-plate for showing the adhesive qualities of a pulley coating or for showing the dilference in the adhesive quality of any other material which may be more or less adhesive than thesurface in its natural state when it is applied thereto according to its purpose, and also for serving as an advertising-card; and it consists of a thin metallic plate having a part of its surface upon one of its sides covered with said coating, an adjoining part uncovered, and another and smaller part covered with a textile fabric, but not with the pulley-coating, and a piece of leather or other belt material which may be attached to said plate for rubbing over the coating and plate from the covered to the uncovered portion for observing the difference in the adhesive qualities of said two surfaces, its entire surface upon the opposite side of the plate being adapted to have printed upon it or to be made to adhere thereto an advertisement setting forth its purpose, the manufacturers address, or any other information relative to its purpose, use, or to the article which is being advertised.
My invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the side of the plate having the pulley-covering applied upon a part of its surface. Fig. 2 is a like view of its opposite side.
Similar numerals indicate like parts in both views.
1 indicates the pulley-coating-covered surface of the plate; 2, the uncovered part of said side; 3, the part having the textile-fabric covering exposed to view; 4, the leather disk for rubbing over the covered and uncovered surfaces; 5, a cord for connecting the disk to the plate; 6, the opposite side of the plate, upon which advertising matter is to be displayed.
The plate can be made of various substances according to its use 5 but for testing a pulley-coating it is preferably made of metal,
such as a sheet of iron or steel, that the uncovered part 2 may be as near like the face of an iron or steel pulley-rim, after it has become somewhat worn, as possible, and it may be of any desired shape, and the arrangement of the several parts is immaterial, excepting that the parts 1 and 2 should adjoin.
The particular pulley-coating for which this plate has been designed to test the efficiency of consists of a sizing to be first applied over the parts 1 and 3, and while still damp a coarse cloth, like cheese-cloth, is applied and allowed to become dry, when a coat of the pulleycoating is applied to the part 1. The cloth may or may not extend under the coating upon the part 1, as may be desired. After the coating has become well dried the plate is ready for use by taking the leather disk in the fingers and rubbing it flatwise back and forth over the parts 1 and 2, when the difference in the adhesion of the disk upon the surfaces of the two parts will be readily observed.
It will be evident that the disk 4 may be a piece unattached to the plate; but an objection to this practice is that it is too easily lost and cannot be found when wanted, while if it is attached it will always be at hand when wanted for trial and will be more likely to induce the one to whom it is given to make an immediate and persistent trial of the coating, for which reason its attachment is pref erable.
Upon the opposite side 6 of the plate any desired advertising matter can be displayed, either by printing it upon the metal or by printing it upon paper or cloth and pasting it upon the plate.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A sample-plate for showing the compara- 'tive adhesive efiects of a pulley-coating, or a coating for making a surface more or less adhesive than without said coating, consisting of a metallic, or other thin plate having a part of its surface upon one of its sides covered with said coating and immediately adjoining said part a smooth and uncovered surface, and in combination a leather or other beltmaterial piece for rubbing over, back and forth upon the covered and uncovered surfaces of said plate, substantially as described.
2. Asample-plate for showing the comparative adhesive effects of a pulley-coating, or a coating for making a surface more or less adhesive than without said coating, consisting of a metallic or other thin plate having a part of its surface upon one of its sides covered with said coating and immediately adjoining said part a smooth and uncovered surface, and a piece of leather or other belt material having a flexible connection with said plate for rubbing back and forth from the covered to the uncovered surfaces of said side of the plate, substantially as described.
' 3. Asample-plate for showing the comparative adhesive effects of a pulley-coating, or a coating for making a surface more or less adhesive than Without said coating, consisting of a metallic or other thin plate having a part of its surface upon one of its sides covered with said coating and immediately adjoining said part a smooth and uncovered surface and also adjoining said covered part a portion having a textile fabric exposed to View, and in combination a disk of leather or other belt material for rubbing back and forth upon the coating covered and uncovered portions of said plate, substantially as set forth.
4. A sample-plate for showing the comparative adhesive effects of a pulley-coating, or a coating for making a surface more or less adhesive than without said coating, consisting of a metallic, or other thin platehaving a part of its surface upon one of its sides covered with said coating and immediately adjoining said part a smooth and uncovered surface, and in combination a piece of leather or other belt material for rubbing over back and forth 40 from the covered to the uncovered surfaces of said side of the plate, and the opposite side of said plate adapted to receive advertising matter, such as its name, a manufacturers address, or other descriptive matter, substantially as described.
5. A sample-plate for showing the comparative adhesive eflects of a pulley-coating, or a coating for making a surface more or less adhesive than without said coating, consisting 50 of a metallic plate, or other thin material having a part of its surface upon one of its sides covered with said coating and immediately adjoining said part a smooth and uncovered 1 surface, and also adjoining said covered part 5 5 a portion having a textile fabric exposed to view, a disk of leather or other belt material having a flexible connection with said plate for rubbing back and forth upon the coating covered and uncovered portions of said plate, 60 Q and the opposite side of said plate adapted to receive advertising matter, such as its name,
a manufacturers address, or other descriptive matter, substantially as shown and described,
