Abstract

A filing system comprises a filing folder 12 having five locations along a top edge 25 which are defined by slots 27. An index card 24 may be retained at anyone of the locations by engagement of tabs in slots 27. The index card 24 may be retained in the slots 27 in any one of four orientations. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Filing systems This invention relates to filing systems.
According to one aspect of the present invention a filing system comprises a filing folder having a plurality of locations along a top edge portion ofthefolder, each location being defined by retaining means and an index card adapted to be retained at one of said locations in one of a plurality of orientations.
The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is an end elevation of a filing system; Figure2 is a plan view of the filing system of Figure 1; Figure3 is a side elevation ofthefiling system of Figures 1 and 2; Figure 4 is a perspective view from the front, one side and above of a filing system in accordance with the present invention; Figures a perspective view from the rear, above and one side of the filing system shown in Figure 4; Figure 6is a side elevation of the filing system shown in Figures 4 and 5; Figure 7 is a plan view of the outside of the filing system of Figures 4to 6, opened up; Figure 8is a plan view of the filing system of Figures 4to 7, opened up;; Figure 9 is an elevation of one side of an index card used in the filing system illustrated in Figures 4to 8; and Figure 10 is an elevation of the otherside of the index card of Figure 9.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a filing system 10 comprising a rack 11 and a group of filing folders 12filed vertically on the rack 11.
The rack 11 comprises two tubular end frames 13a, 13b, between which there extend two side rails 1 4a and 14b and two base rails 15a and 15b forming a base 15, the rails 14a, 14b, 15a and 15b being welded or otherwise securelyfastened attheir endsto the respective end frames 13a, 13b.
Each folder 12 has two substantially equal covers 16, 17 hingedly connected together integrally at 18, and made of polypropylene. As seen in Figures 4to 6, each side 19,20 of each folder 12 (in its folded condi tion)hasasinglelaterallyprojecting hook 21,22 formed by correspondingly overlapping hook portions 21 a, 22a of cover 16 and hook portions 21 b, 22b of cover 17. Each side 19,20 of the folder 12, both above and below the respective hook 21,22 is perpendicularto the base 23 of the folder 12, the side portions 1 9a, 20a above the hook 21,22 overhanging the side portion 1 9b, 20b below.Accordingly, each cover 16 and 17 offolder 12 has respective upper side portions 19a1,20al and 19a2, 20a2 over-hanging respective side portions 19b1,20b1 and 19b2, 20b2, all of said side portions 19a1,2 and 19b1,2 and 20a1,2 20b1,2being perpendicular to the base 23.
The laterally projecting hooks 21,22 hook over the side rails 14a, 14b without putting any substantial weight on the side rails 1 4a, 14b. It is the base rails 15a, 1Sbwhich supporttheweight of each filing fol- der 12, the side rails 1 4a, 1 4b merely laterally locating each filing folder 12. The height of each side rails 14a, 14b is substantially less than the height (as filed) of each folder 12.
Each filing folder 12 is in combination with are- spective index card 24 carried by a top edge portion 25 offolder 12 (or, more particularly, a top edge portion 25a of cover 17). The folder 12 permits a choice of five positions (see Figure 1) for the index card 24 along said edge portion 25 of the folder 12. The card 24 is adapted to provide a choice of our orientations ofthe card 24 in each said position.
More particularly, the card 24 has two tabs 26a, 26b to locate in slots 27 in the top edge portion 25a of cover 17. The cover 17 has a series of the slots 27 along the top edge portion 25a to perm it the choice of five positions mentioned above. Thefourpossible orientations of the index card 24 are by reversal and/ or inversion. Figures 9 and 10 illustrate (by the letters 'A' to 'D') how the four different message surfaces or information surfaces 24a to 24d of the index card 24 can be positioned so as to be visible from the front of the folder (see Figure 4) when filed in the rack 11.
Finally, each cover 16, 17 offolder 12 is provided with conventional means 28 for securing documents.
1. Afiling system comprising a filing folder having a plurality of locations along a top edge portion of the folder, each location being defined by retaining means and an index card adapted to be retained at one of said locations in one of a plurality of orientations.
2. Afiling system as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the index card has tabs to locate in slots in said top edge portion, the folder having a series of such slots along the edge portion to define a plurality of locations.
3. Afiling system as claimed in Claim 1 or2 wherein the index card has four possible orientations by reversal and/or inversion.
