IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO FILING SYSTEMS This invention relates to filing systems.
There is disclosed herein a filing system comprising a filing folder adapted to be held generally vertically upright, the folder having an upper edge portion provided with a plurality of locations having retaining means for an index card adapted to be retained at a selected one of said locations, the index card having four possible orientations relative to the location in which it is held by reversal and/or inversion and having in each orientation a projecting portion which projects above said upper edge portion, the projecting po-tion presenting a projected face visible from the front of the filing system.
There is further disclosed herein a filing system comprising a filing j o, folder adapted to be held generally vertically upright, the folder having an upper edge portion provided with one or more locations having retaining Y5eti \NmlewCtln or means for an index card adapted to be retained at a selected one of said So', locations, the index card having four possible orientations relative to the o. location in which it is held by reversal and/or inversio and having in each orientation a projecting portion which projects above said upper edge o portion, the projecting portion presenting a projected face virible from S 20 the front of the filing system.
Preferably, the index card has tabs to located in slots in said upper edge portion, the folder having a series of slots along the edge portion to S define a plurality of locations.
The invention may, for example form part of a filing system further coiprising a rack and a group of the filing folders filed vertically on the o rack, the rack having a base to support the weight of each filing folder and side rails to laterally locate each filing folder, each filing folder o° having laterally projecting hook portions intermediate the top and bottom o o 00 the folder to hook over the side rails without putting any substantial weight on these rails, the height of each side rail being substantially less than the height of each folder.

ALB:423M I I L- SI~IIllklII~IlblL II WCi 2 The invention may also, for example, be used with the filing folder which is formed at its sides, intermediate the top and bottom of the folder, with laterally projecting hooks to hook over side members of a filing unit.
C02 o C o C 000 The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a filing system embodying all three aspects of the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view of the filing system of igure 1; Figure 3 is a side elevation of the filing system of Figures 1 and 2; Figure 4 is a perspective view from the front, one side and above of a filing folder in combination with an index card in the filing system of Figures 1 to 3; Figure 5 is a perspective view from the rear, above and one side of the combination of filing folder and card of Figure 4; Figure 6 is a side elevation of the combination of filing folder and card of Figures 4 and 0C" 2u 222 o.

10 Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a filing system 10 comprising a rack 11 and a group of filing folders 12 filed vertically on the rack 11.
The rack 11 comprises two tubular end frames 13a, 13b, between which there extend two side rails 14a and 14b and two base rails 15a and 15b forming a base 15, the rails 14a, 14b, 15a and 15b being welded or otherwise securely fastened at their ends to the respective end frames 13a, 13b.
Each folder 12 has two substantially equal covers 16, 17 hingedly connected together integrally at 18, and made of polypropylene. As seen in Figs 4 to 6, each side 19, Lio a o O S o0 0 0 0 8o C 0 0 1 S.
of each folder 12 (in its folded condition) has a single laterally projecting hook 21, 22 formed by correspondingly overlapping hook portions 21a, 22a of cover 16 and hook portions 21b,22b of cover 17. Each side 19, 20 of the folder 12, both above and below the respective hook 21, 22 is perpendicular to the base 23 of the folder 12, the side portion 19a, 20a above the hook 21, 22 overhanging the side portion 19b,20b below.
Accordingly, each cover 16 and 17 of folder 12 has 10 respective upper side portions 19al, 20al and 19a2, 20a2 over-hanging respective side portions 19bl, 20bl and 19b2, 20b2, all of said side portions 19al, 2 and 19bl, 2 and 20al,2 20bl,2 being perpendicular to the base 23.
The laterally projecting hooks 21, 22 hook over the side rails 14a, 14b without putting any substantial weight on the side rails 14a, 14b. It is the base rails 15a, which support the weight of each filing folder 12, the side rails 14a, 14b merely laterally locating each filing folder 12. The height of each side rails 14a, 14b 20 is substantially less than the height (as filed) of each folder 12.
Each filing folder 12 is in combination with a respective index card 24 carried by a top edge portion of folder 12 (or, more particularly, a top edge portion 25a of cover 17). The folder 12 permits a r choice of five positions (see Fig. 1) for the index card 24 along said edge portion 25 of the folder 12. The card 24 is adapted to provide a choice of four orientations of the card 24 in each said position.
More particularly, the card 24 has two tabs 26a, 26b to locate in slots 27 in the top edge portion 25a of cover 17. The cover 17 has a series of the slots 27 along the top edge portion 25a to permit the choice of five positions mentioned above. The four possible oc 10 orientations of the index card 24 are by reversal and/or S'o Sinversion. Figs. 9 and 10 illustrate (by the letters "A" "to how the four different message surfaces or s information surfaces 24a to 24d of the index card 24 can be positioned so as to be visible from the front of the folder (see Fig. 4) when filed in the rack 11.
0 00 Finally, each cover 16, 17 of folder 12 is provided with 00 0 0 os conventional means 28 for securing documents.
