Abstract

A filing system comprises a rack (11) supporting filing folders (112), the weight of the folders (12) being taken by base rails (15a, 15b). Laterally projecting hooks (21, 22) of the folders (12) engage over side rails (14a, 14b) of the rack (11) without putting any weight on the side rails. An index card (24) can be put in any one of five positions along a top edge portion (25) of folder (12) and in any one of four possible orientations in each position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to filing systems This invention relates to filing systems.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a filing system comprising a rack and a group of filing folders filed vertically on the rack, the rack having a base to support the weight of each filing folder and side rails to laterally locate each filing folder, each filing folder having laterally projecting hook portions intermediate the top and bottom of the folder to hook over the side rails without putting any substantial weight on the side rails, the height of each side rail being substantially less than the height of each folder.
According to second aspect of the invention there is provided a filing folder in combination with an index card carried by a top edge portion of the folder, the folder permitting a choice of positions for the index card along said edge portion of the folder, the card being adapted to provide a choice of orientations of the card in each said position.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a filing folder formed at its sides, intermediate the top and bottom of the folder with laterally projecting hooks to hook over side members of a filing unit.
The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is an end elevation of a filing system embodying all three aspect of the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view of the filing system of Fig. 1; Figure 3 is a side elevation of the filing system of Figs. 1 and 2; Figure 4 is a perspective view from the front, one side and above of a filing folder in combination with an index card in the filing system of Figs. 1 to 3; Figure 5 is a perspective view from the rear, above and one side of the combination of filing folder and card of Fig. 4; Figure 6 is a side elevation of the combination of filing folder and card of Figs. 4 and 5; Figure 7 is a plan view of the outside of the filing folder of Figs. 4 to 6, opened up, in combination with the card;; Figure 8 is a plan view of the filing folder of Figs. 4 to 7, opened up, in combination with the card; Figure 9 is an elevation of one side of a card similar to that illustrated in the preceding Figures; and Figure 10 is an elevation of the otherside of the card of Fig. 9.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a filing system 10 comprising a rack 11 and a group of filing folders 1 2 filed vertically on the rack 11.
The rack 11 comprises two tubular end frames 13a, 13b, between which there extend two side rails 14a and 14b and two base rails 15a and 15b forming a base 15, the rails 14a, 14b, 15a and 15b being welded or otherwise securely fastened at their ends to the respective end frames 13a, 13b.
Each folder 1 2 has two substantially equal covers 16, 1 7 hingedly connected together integrally at 18, and made of polypropylene.
As seen in Figs. 4 to 6, each side 19, 20 of each folder 1 2 (in its folded condition) has a single laterally projecting hook 21, 22 formed by correspondingly overlapping hook portions 21a, 22a of cover 16 and hook portions 21b, 22b of cover 1 7. Each side 19, 20 of the folder 12, both above and below the respective hook 21, 22 is perpendicular to the base 23 of the folder 12, the side portion 19a, 20a above the hook 21, 22 overhanging the side portion 19b, 20b below.Accordingly, each cover 1 6 and 1 7 of folder 1 2 has respective upper side portions 19a1, 20a1 and 19a2, 20a2 over-hanging respective side portions 19by, 20b 1 and 1 9b2, 20b2, all of said side portions 19a1, 2 and 19b1, 2 and 20a1,2 20b1,2 being perpendicular to the base 23.
The laterally projecting hooks 21, 22 hook over the side rails 14a, 1 4b without putting any substantial weight on the side rails 14a, 14b. It is the base rails 15a, 15b which support the weight of each filing folder 12, the side rails 14a, 1 4b merely laterally locating each filing folder 1 2. The height of each side rails 14a, 14b is substantially less than the height (as filed) of each folder 1 2.
Each filing folder 1 2 is in combination with a respective index card 24 carried by a top edge portion 25 of folder 1 2 (or. more particularly, a top edge portion 25a of cover 17).
The folder 1 2 permits a choice of five positions (see Fig. 1) for the index card 24 along said edge portion 25 of the folder 12. The card 24 is adapted to provide a choice of four orientations of the card 24 in each said position.
More particularly, the card 24 has two tabs 26a, 26b to locate in slots 27 in the top edge portion 25a of cover 1 7. The cover 1 7 has a series of the slots 27 along the top edge portion 25a to permit the choice of five positions mentioned above. The four possible orientations of the index card 24 are by reversal and/or inversion. Figs. 9 and 10 illustrate (by the letters "A" to "D") how the four different message surfaces or information surfaces 24a to 24d of the index card 24 can be positioned so as to be visible from the front of the folder (see Fig. 4) when filed in the rack 11.
Finally, each cover 16, 1 7 of folder 12 is provided with conventional means 28 for securing documents.
