Abstract

426,487. Converting. STIEGLITZ, I. LOW-, 150, Vorgartenstrasse, Vienna. Oct. 4, 1933, No. 27322. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1932. [Class 38 (ii)] [See also Group XXXVII] A vibrating electro magnetic interrupter for use in apparatus for producing high tensior A. C. for luminous tubes medical apparatus, &c from a direct - current source comprises a re silient tongue which interrupts two circuits and on which the twc contacts controlling the circuits are mounted, the interrupter contact for the operating electromagnet being resilient relatively to the tongue whereas the contact for the circuit of the direct current source is rigid relatively to the tongue and is situated so near the point at which the tongue is clamped that after the rigid contact bears against its mounted contact the free end of the tongue can swing out beyond the contacting position under the influence of the electromagnet thus increasing the contacting pressure of the rigid contact. As shown in Fig. 1 the magnetic reed 3 is clamped at one end between brass plates 2 with an intermediate layer 4 each side of resilient or yieldable insulating material. The circuit of the operating electromagnet 16 is interrupted between an adjustable relatively fixed contact 15 and a yieldable contact 11 carried by the reed. On the opposite side the reed carries a rigid contact 9 adapted to engage periodically a relatively fixed but adjustable contact 13 so supplying current impulses to the primary winding 25 of a transformer the secondary winding 24 supplying the A.C. output at terminals 28. If desired contacts in the transformer circuit may also be arranged at the opposite side of the reed for doubling the frequency of the A.C. produced. The rigid contact 9 is situated so near to the clamping point of the reed 3 that when the contacts 9, 13 are brought into engagement the upper part of the reed continues its vibration for some distance before it reaches its full amplitude. The action reinforces the contact pressure between contacts 9, 13, and produces a rapid make and break between them. In a further modification, Fig. 6, (not shown), several vibratory tongues may be arranged to be operated by a single electromagnet the circuit of which is interrupted by contacts controlled by one only of these tongues.
