Abstract

359,331. Transformers; converting. MARTENS, B., 12, Fõrberstrasse, Villingen, Baden, Germany. Jan. 21, 1931, No. 2070. [Class 38 (ii).] A transformer for supplying toys &c. from either A.C. or D.C. mains comprises a primary winding in two halves B, C through which, when D.C. is available, current is alternately passed by a vibrating switch 5, 6, 7 driven by an electromagnet E. When A.C. is available, the switch 1 is moved from contact 4 to contact 2 so that the transformer is energized by the winding B in series with an additional coil D. A condenser G is connected as shown to eliminate sparking during normal operation at the contacts 6, 7 and an additional condenser H is provided to eliminate sparking due to the breaking of shortcircuit current at the contact 6 on starting under load conditions. Modified switching arrangements are described in which in one case current in the electromagnet E is interrupted by a second vibrating contact, and in another case the contacts 6, 7 are mounted on a rocking arm electromagnetically driven.
