Abstract

208,073. Western Electric Co., Ltd., (Rutten, L. van). April 6, 1923. Electromagnetic interrupters.-An interrupter designed to open or close circuits for periods of a fraction of a second to several seconds comprises an electromagnet with two windings 11, 11<1>, an armature 9, and a polarizing permanent magnet arranged as in an alternating current bell. The armature carries springs 4, 4<1> carrying masses 5, 5<1>. When the armature is attracted by the winding 11<1>, spring 4 strikes a contact 7 and makes several oscillations before coming to rest. The winding 11' is thus short circuited slowly and ultimately the armature is pulled over by the winding 11, which is then short-circuited in a similar manner. Resistances 10, 10<1> prevent sparking at the contact 7. The period of closure of the circuit is governed by means of the screws shown at the top of Fig. 4.
