Be it known that I, DANIEL D. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing-at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Relays, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to voice frequency relays and more particularly to relays of this type for Controlling electrical circuits. '--The object of this invention is to provide an vimproved relay of this character, wherein the energization of a coil or a plurality of windings positioned in a magnetic field, serves to actuate an lassociated coil which in turn controls a secondary circuit.
Another object of this invention is to lpro-` vide means whereby a circuit including a l source of alternating current anda coil or plurality of windings positioned in a magnetic field, may be so related to another coil not connected to any source of current, and differently positioned in the samecmagnetic field, that the effect of said first circuit upon said coil is to control another circuit.
To attain these objects, a feature of the` invention resides in the provision of a relay having a coil positioned in the magnetic *0 field thereof and adapted to be energized by voice frequency currents, and a second coil, closed upon itself, and movably ysus- I pended in said field from contacts to be controlled. Thus, the energizationf of the first 5 coil, induces vibration of the second coil in said field to open the contacts, and thereby break a normally closed circuit.
Another feature of the invention comprises a relay having serially connected 0 windings on 'a closed'magnetic core, wherein the leakage flux produced by the energization of said windings, actua-tes a movable closed circuit coil interlinkedwith said core between said windings and supported from 5 contacts to be controlled. Vibration of the movable coil due to energization of the serially connected windings, causes the opening of contacts, hence breaking a normally closed circuit.
Other and further features will be understood from the following description of the invention in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 shows a cross-section'fview of relay illustrating the invention together with circuits therefor; Fig. 2 illustrates a plan ortop view of the relay shown in Fig. 1; while Fig. 3 is illustrative of arelay having a closed magnetic core on which two spaced and serially connected, windings are positioned between which a short-circuited coil loosely encircling the core is suflicient for contacts to be cotrolled. l l
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a cup shaped electromagnet structure is shown having a magnetizing winding 18 energized by battery 14 4surrounding its central pole 1. Suitably attached to the upper extremities of pole 2, and diametrically opposed to veach yother are insulating blocks 8 and 4 which serve as supports for hook eye terminals 5 antl 6. Terminals 5 and 6 at' their eyes 8 and 9 respectively, loosely support hook ended contact member 7, to which in turn is rigidly attached, at points 10 and 11, a light closed circuit coil 12 which loosely encircles the upper end 13, of the core 1 of the electromagnet. Immediately below coil 12 and suitably spaced therefrom is rigidly positioned another coil 15, which is energized by a source of alternating current 16 upon the closure of the circuit innany suitable manner. l
The operation of the relay shown in Fig.
v1 will now be described.
Coil 15, which is rigidly positioned inthe magnetic field of electromagnet 1, is energized when alternating current is supplied from source 16. Upon the energization of coil 15, closed circuit coil 12 will vibrate up and down in` accordance with the frequency of the applied eurent, to open the normally closed contacts 8 and 9, and break the circuit tobe controlled whichincludes grounded battery, relay 17, terminal 6, contacts 9 (where the hook eye extremity of terminal 6 meets the hook extremity of contact member 7) Contact member 7, contacts 8, terminal 5,' to ground.
Hence, when coil 1 5, is energized, coil 12 is caused to vibrate andthus intermittentlyv opens contacts 8 and 9 to break the electrical continuity of the normally closed circuit containing relay 17. When the current from source 16 is cut off, coil 15 will deenergize. coil 12 will thereupon cease vibrating, the contact member 7 restores to normal at contacts 8 and 9, due to Ithe nat` iii-al force of gravity on coil 12, and the oir cuit restores to its normally closed condition.
Considering the relay shown in Fig. 3, 20 illustrates a closed magnetic core consisting of a U shaped magnet' 40, having a keeper 2G closing its two polar extremities. 21 and 22 irepresent respectively two spaced and serially `connected stationary windings onv keeper 20 adapted to be energized by voice frequency currents from source 23. Between windings 21 and 22, is had a movable closed circuit coil 24, loosely encircling keeper 20.
When alternating current from source 23 .is supplied ,to the serially connected windings 21 and 22, movable coil'24`will vibrate up and down between these windings in accordance with the frequency of the applied current.' In vibrating, the coil 24 will cause contact members 25 and 26 to similarly vi brate and thus break contact with terminals 29 and 30 at contacts 33 and 34. In break 1. 4. A relay comprising a magnet, a coil rigidly positioned in the magnetic field thereof and adapted to be energized by voice frequency currents, a second coil closed upon itself, and inovably suspended in said field froni contacts controlled thereby, whereby said second coil is moved up and down in said field to open and close said contacts iii response to the energization of said first coil by second voice frequency current.

8. In a switching device, a magnet, a vibratory device including a coil mounted thereon and suspended in the magnetic field lll) created by said magnet, a second coil, and v means comprising a source of alternating current for energizingl said second coil to cause said vibratory device to function.
9. In a` switchingdevice, a first circuit, f1; terminals therefor, contact members loosely making contact with said terminals means including a vibratory device and a coil mounted thereon for normally maintaining said circuit closed, and means including a second coil for actuating said first coil to open said circuit at the contacts of said contact members and terminals.
10. In a switching system, a relay-coniprising a magnet, a first coil rigidly positioiied in the magnetic field thereof andy connected to a source vof alternating current, terminals rigidly fixed, a Contact member loosely engaged at itsv extremities by said terminals, a second coil mounted on said contact member and suspended therefrom in superposition to said first coil and spaced therefrom, a circuit normally closed by said contact member at said terminals,'a second circuit including a source of alternating current conected to said first coil, and means for applying said current to said rst coil through said second circuit to cause said second coil to vibrate in accordance with the frequency of said current, and break saidfirst circuit at the contacts of said contact member and terminals.
11. A closed magnetic core, a pluralityof serially connected windings, a source of a1- ternating current adapted tobe connected to said windings, and means including a coil positioned between said windings and surroundingl said core adapted to vibrate upon the energization of said windings by said source of current to control a local circuit.

In a circuit control system, a closed magnetic core, two serially connected windingsl on said core, a circuit, terminals therefor, a closed circuit coil loosely encircling said core between said windings and normally closing said circuit at contact members attached thereto, and means compris-- ing a source of alternating current for ener'-, gizing said windingsto cause the vibration of said coil to break said circuit.
14. In a circuit control system, a first circuit comprising two serially connected windings about a closed magnetic core and s a source of alternating currenta second circuit including rigidly positioned terminals,
and a coil encircling said core and loosely suspended between said windings from said terminals by contact members attached to said coil, said contact Amembers being adapted to close said second circuit when vthey are in engagement with said terminals,
whereby the energization of said windings by said source of current causes said coil to vibrate in accordance with the' frequency thereof, to break said second circuit at the front contact of said contact members and terminals.
15. A magnetic structure comprising means positioned in the magnetic field thereof for actuating a coil loosely mounted and normally in contact at a plurality of points to close an electrical circuit. Y

A magnetic structure comprising means rigidlypositioned in the polar field thereof, a source of alternating current adapted' to be connected to said means, a coil, loosely mounted and having means attached thereto for normall making contact with rigidly fixed termnals, said coil being actuated upon the energization of said means to vibrate in accordance with the frequency ofthe applied current to break said contacts.
17. A relay comprising a closed magnetic core, an energzing winding interlinked'with said core, a closed secondary winding interlinked with said core and contacts operated by vsaid secondary winding.

A rela-y comprising a closed magnetic core, a primary winding of said relay, a secondary winding loosely associated with said core, said windings being so constructed and arranged that said secondary winding is energized bythe leakage flux produced by said Y rimary winding, and contact controlled) by said secondary winding.
