Abstract
574,808. Locating conductors. CINEMATELEVISION, Ltd., and WEST, S. S. May 21, 1943, Nos. 8086 and 14884. [Class 37] Apparatus for locating masses of electrically conducting or magnetic material comprises an electrical oscillatory circuit including coupled coils, the circuit being arranged to command or cease oscillation as a result of a change in the coupling of the coils due to a change in the amount of electrically conducting or magnetic material in the vicinity of the coils. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 a valve 3 is arranged as an oscillator by back-coupling the tuned anode circuit 1, 6 to the tuned grid circuit 2, 8 by means of the coupling between coils 1, 2. Coils 1, 2, Fig. 2, are arranged as a movable search head and are physically associated so as to have zero coupling. Resistances 4, 7 are adjusted so that the value 3 is on the verge of oscillating. When coils 1, 2 approach a conducting body, the increase in the coupling causes the valve 3 to oscillate and an indication is given in headphones 5. Alternatively a change in amplitude of the oscillation is used to indicate the presence of a conducting body. Several ways of arranging the coils are described, Fig. 3 (not shown). Also means for adjusting the initial degree of coupling of the coils by means of dust cases or auxiliary coils are also described, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). Further, the change in anode current due to increased oscillation may be used to operate a relay or may switch on a second oscillator to give an indication.
