Abstract
424,988. Rotary pumps. BANCROFT, F. E., 19, Delaine Road, Withington, Manchester, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Dec. 5, 1933, No. 34211. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary vacuum pump comprises a rotor in two portions 8, 9, and a driving gear 10, mounted in bearings 11, 12. Each rotor contains a pair of radial vanes separated by springs, the pairs preferably being at right angles to one another. The two rotors may form first and second stages of a pump, the whole being sealed and lubricated by oil in an outer casing 7. A driving spindle 19 is provided with an oil groove 23 for sealing against admission of outside air. An oil inlet valve 26 to the intermediate chamber 21, which lies between the pump stages, contains a threaded spindle 35 having a flat 36 along which oil passes from a strainer 38, to a duct 33 leading to the chamber 21. A slot 37 permits radial expansion of the screw thread. When the pump is stopped, the oil level falls below the flat 36, and air flows in from a vent 39. The two pump stages may be in parallel. Side thrust on the spindle 19, due to pressure differences on its ends, is balanced by means of helical threads on the gears 10, 18.
