1,248,032. Rotary vacuum pumps. EDWARDS HIGH VACUUM INTERNATIONAL Ltd. Sept.21, 1967 [Sept.21, 1967], No.44611/68. Divided out of 1,248,032. Heading F1F. A rotary vacuum pump comprises a pair of intermeshing screw type rotors 4, 5, Fig.1, mounted in overlapping bores on parallel shafts 10, 10<SP>1</SP> within a housing 1 connected by a flange 2 to a space to be evacuated and by an outlet 3 to an oil-sealed backing pump (not shown). The shafts 10, 10<SP>1</SP> are fixed at their lower ends to the housing and extend as cantilevers into rotor bores which are closed at their high vacuum ends 6, 7 to isolate the oil lubricating the bearings from the said space. The pump which operates "dry" includes a running clearance of the order of À005" between the rotors and the housing bores and synchronizing gears 4a, 5a. The pump may operate as the backing pump in which case, except for a film of oil the rotors are a close fit in the housing bores and the synchronizing gears 11, 12 are omitted. The pump then having rotors 4<SP>11</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 4 is mounted in a single housing in series with a high vacuum pump having rotors 4, 5 rotatably mounted on cantilever extensions of the shafts 10, 10<SP>1</SP>. Oil lubricating the bearings is sealed from entering the high vacuum pump, the rotors 4, 5 of which rotate with clearance between them and the housing bores. The low vacuum backing pump is fitted with a flap valve or valves at its discharge end. Two "dry" pumps may be mounted in parallel in a single housing with a common discharge connected to an oil-sealed backing pump.
