Abstract

342,791. Rotary pumps. GREENFIELD, F. C., Merevale, Sutton-at-Hone, near Dartford, Kent. Oct. 12, 1929, No. 30963. [Class 110 (iii).] Movable-abutment type ; packing drums ; arrangement of bearings.-In a screw pump in which a right-handed screw and a left-handed screw mesh without the teeth touching the rotors have quadruple threads, the pitch in each being equal to the distance between the inlet port and the delivery. Helical packing springs 31a fit in grooves on the peripheries of the threads. Double-acting ball thrust bearings 16 and 20 on one end of each rotor shaft 3b and 2b are axially adjustable to position the rotors 3 and 2, the bearings being locked in position by nuts 17 and 21 respectively. A housing 19 on the driving rotor is also adjustable and has a locking ring 35. Lubricating oil supplied to the various bearing points is led to the interstices between the meshing threads for sealing purposes. In a modification two screw pumps run on the ends of two shafts, the threads of two rotors on each shaft being opposite handed for balancing purposes. The pump can act as a two stage compressor. Another proposed form comprises a central screw meshing with several other screws.
