Abstract

770,475. Rotary engines and pumps. BERRY, F. Oct. 29, 1954, No. 31287/54. Class 110 (2). In a multiple pump, Figs. 1 and 2, of the rotary abutment type, recesses 43, 47 are formed as shown in the cylinder walls for internal pressure balancing purposes and ducts 45, 46 are provided to interconnect the low-pressure sides of the individual pump units for external balancing purposes. The piston and abutment rings may be formed separately from or integral with their respective shafts or the abutment shaft may be provided with the necessary recesses. The low-pressure sides of the bearing surfaces of the abutment rings are interconnected by ducts 53, 54. The casing is made up of intermediate plate members and end members interconnected as shown, anti-friction bearings being positioned as necessary by rings 78. In a modification, Figs. 13 and 14 (not shown), the ducts 45, 46 of Figs. 1 and 2 extend through the casing wall as opposed to the shafts and are herein referenced 112, 113. In a second modification, applied to a pump comprising two co-planar cylinders arranged in series, see Fig. 10 (not shown), the recesses 43 are arranged as in Fig. 2 or modified as shown in Fig. 11. The recesses 43 may be disposed equi-distant about the rotor axis and replaced by elongated slots, see Figs. 6 and 12 (not shown). In a further modification, the recesses arranged in the c position of Fig. 2 are dispensed with, see Fig. 7 (not shown). The rotor may be internally grooved, see Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown). Relative dimensions of the recesses are given in the Specification. Specifications 604,972 and 610,068 are referred to.
