Abstract

25,247. Gray, H., and Drummond, C. S. Nov. 2. Gyratory-piston type; packing drums, vanes, etc.; distributing and cut-off.-The piston comprises two or more partly-cylindrical intersecting lobed portions, and rotates on its own axis in one direction within a fixed casing comprising three or more partly cylindrical intersecting portions, the piston also gyrating around the centre of the casing in the opposite direction to that of its rotation. Three distributing-valves are provided, one for each lobed portion of the casing, and they are operated by the rotation of bearing-blocks for the main shaft caused by the gyratory motion of the piston. Three packing- strips forming a triangle are provided at each end of the casing, and divide the casing into three separate lobed chambers. Fig. 1 shows a view in longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 shows a view in transverse section taken in the plane II-II, Fig. 1. The piston a is fixed on the main shaft d, which rotates on its axis in the direction of the arrow x, and simultaneously gyrates in a circle z in the opposite direction, i.e. that of the arrow y. The shaft d is provided with roller bearings e, g formed of helical springs to prevent grinding at high speeds, these rollers being mounted in eccentric holes in cylindrical bearing-blocks f, and between the bearing - blocks f and the casing respectively. The bearing - blocks thus rotate because of the gyration of the piston and shaft d twice as fast as the rotation of the shaft d; this is utilized to operate the oscillatory distributing- valves 2 through cams 4, each valve being thus operated twice in every revolution of the piston, or once for each lobe. Pinions k on the shaft d gear with internally toothed rings l in the casing, the ratio of the gearing being two to three, for instance, 20 teeth on each pinion k and 30 teeth on each ring l. The power is transmitted from the shaft d to the power shaft by a universal joint 10 or by flexible shafting; or the piston may be free upon its shaft, which is then connected by crank-webs to the power shaft; or the power may be taken from the revolving blocks f. The flat ends of the lobed chambers of the casing may be isolated by a packing-ring or segments, or by flat strips 1 lying in recessed grooves in the end walls of the casing and provided with springs. Shoes q, rocking in spring-pressed splines r which slide in recesses in the casing, pack the piston, which does not touch the walls of the casing. Cylindrical shoes rolling in the splines r may replace the shoes q. The distributing-valves may slide, oscillate, rotate, or lift, and are driven by one or more cams on the bearing-blocks f, or by eccentrics or otherwise. The cams may be duplicated to provide for reversal of the engine, or gearing maybe provided for shifting the relative positions of the cams.
