Abstract

424,345. Door-operating appliances. COATES, H., 265, Claremont Road, Moss Side, Manchester. Aug. 24, 1933, No. 23510. [Class 65 (i)] A spring closing device for doors comprises a U-shaped bracket fixed to the door post and a spring rigidly anchored direct to the bracket and acting directly on the door at its free end, the spring loosely engaging a rod carried by the bracket. A hand-operated catch may be provided to hold the spring out of action when required. In the form shown, the spring comprises a strip of metal 16 rigidly fixed to a U-shaped bracket 15 fixed to the door post, bent round a rod 19 carried by the bracket and carrying a roller 18 at its free end to engage the door. The bracket also carries a turnbutton 20, by which the spring can be held in its fully-stressed position (corresponding to the open position of the door) when it is desired that the door shall not close automatically. In a modification, the spring comprises a length of wire bent at its middle to form an arm carrying the roller 18, each end being formed into a helix loosely surrounding the rod 19 and being secured at the free end to the bracket 15.
