Abstract

589,347. Clips; door-closing devices ; spring hinges. FRANCIS & BARNETT, Ltd., and FRANCIS, G. I. July 19, 1944, No. 13778. [Classes 44, 65 (i) and 65 (ii)] A spring-hinge device particularly applicable as a paper clip or door-closing device, comprises a wire yoke a the ends of which extend through cam slots b<1> in a fixed housing b and are inwardly bent as at a<2> for pivotal mounting in apertured caps e mounted on the ends of a coiled compression spring d, the spring and parts a<2> being coaxial. When the yoke is swung away from its normal position in contact with a back-plate c on which the housing b is mounted, the cam slots move the limbs of the yoke inwards to stress the spring which, when the yoke is released, co-operate with the cam slots to swing the yoke back to normal position. Papers, not shown, may be clipped between the yoke and support, Fig. 2, showing the normal or gripping position of the yoke, and its open position, in dotted and full lines respectively. The lower ends of the limbs may be cranked as at a<1>, and the upper ends bent away from the support, as shown, to facilitate hand manipulation. As a door-closing device, the housing is mounted on the jamb and the yoke bears against a plate in the door. By suitably forming the cam slots the compression spring may be replaced by a tension spring.
