424,175. Supply systems for vacuum &c. lamps. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Sept. 28, 1934, No. 27850. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1933. Addition to 389,025. [Class 38 (iv)] [See also Group XL] In a supply system for discharge lamps in which the lamps 6 are connected to transformers 2 the primaries of which are connected to the supply in series with each other and with a choke 4, a condenser 10 is connected across all the transformer primaries during starting to facilitate ignition in the discharge tubes. The condenser may be retained in circuit to cause accelerated heating up of the incandescent electrodes when these are heated by the discharge. The capacity 10 and inductance 4 may be tuned to the third harmonic of the supply frequency and the inductance 4 may be designed to be unsaturated at no load whilst the transformers 2 are run at saturation. The condenser 10 may be switched out after the discharge tubes have been ignited by means responsive to the consequent increase in current, as by a current relay or a relay energized by the leakage field of the choke 4. The choke 4 may comprise two series connected coils, one fixed and one movable on a common core, the latter being suspended from a lever arm counterbalanced by a weight so as to maintain the load current constant.
