[Class 143] Compound - lever apparatus; spring balances.-A bathroom scale comprises in combination a fixed base 2, lever mechanism 18, 24 mounted on the base, a platform 28 mounted on the lever mechanism, a weighing spring 41 mounted on the base and connected to the lever mechanism, a rack 56 mounted to slide vertically and actuated by the lever mechanism, an horizontal shaft 70, a pinion mounted on the shaft and in engagement with the rack, and an indicating dial including a disc 74 having a flange 76 around its edge mounted on the shaft, the flange being turned in the direction of the pinion and covering and enclosing the pinion and rack and the connection between the rack and the lever mechanism. The rack reciprocates within a tubular guide 48 and is actuated by a knifeedged fork at the end of the lever 24. The dial is enclosed within a casing 78 provided with a reading aperture 80, and the platform is cut away to accommodate the casing. The spring 41 is supported by a screw 40 provided with an adjusting nut 44. A blade-spring presses the rack towards its pinion. Wires 86 loosely connect the platform and the base. The scale is open at the sides thus giving ready access to the lever system for adjustment purposes. Bearings.-The knife-edge pivots of the levers are of square cross-section so that they may be turned when worn to present new edges to their bearing surfaces.
