Abstract
419,834. Friction clutches. BORG & BECK CO., Ltd., and BOUGHTON, E. B., Brock House, Langham Street, Regent Street, London. July 1, 1933, No. 18740. [Class 80 (ii).] The radial levers 8 for withdrawing the spring-loaded pressure plate 3 of a friction clutch are so mounted that, during operation, each lever executes, at one of its bearings, a rolling movement whereby a longitudinal translation is imparted to the lever, one or both of the other bearings being such as to permit this translation without rubbing or sliding. As shown in Fig. 1, wherein the levers 8 are adapted to be turned anticlockwise for disengagement, a floating pin 10 mounted in each lever rolls in an enlarged aperture 11a in a bolt 11, which is mounted in the cover plate 5 and is slidably supported in the plate 3. The rolling action is facilitated by forming flats 11b on the operative part of the aperture, or by forming this part of larger radius than the remainder of the aperture. The outer end of each lever is connected to a lug 3a projecting from the plate 3 by an encircling tension link 12 having knife edges bearing in a recess 3b in the lug 3a and in a curved socket 8d in the lever. Anti-rattle springs 7 are fitted between the cover plate 5 and the levers. Alternatively, a compression link 18, Fig. 7, may bear by rounded or knife edges between a curved socket in the lever and a lug 3d projecting from the plate 3, the link having extensions 18c which loosely engage in grooves in the lug 3d. Springs 16 may be provided to maintain the inner ends of the levers 8 in engagement with the actuating collar 9. In the form shown in Fig. 3, each lever has a rounded outer end. contacting with a flat face on a lug 3d projecting from the plate 3 and a compression link 13 with knife edges bears between the cover plate 5 and the lever. Projections 13a and 13b enter loosely into apertures in the plate 5 and lever respectively, and anti-rattle springs 14 are fitted between the actuating collar 9 and the cover plate. Where the levers are adapted to be turned clockwise for disengagement, enlarged apertures 22, Fig. 8, formed in lugs 21 on the plate 3, receive pins 25 mounted in the levers, struts 27 with rounded or knife edges being arranged between sockets in the outer ends of the levers and in the plate 3. If desired, knife-edged links may also be arranged between the inner ends of the levers and the actuating collar 9.
