Band. - A brake of the kind comprising an elastic steel strip concentric with a brake drum and carrying a friction lining is released by one or more arched springs bearing against shoulders on the strip and adapted to press bent extremities of the strip against the operating cam. As shown in Fig. 1, the steel strip 5 is provided with a friction lining and having inwardly bent extremties 5<a> engaging the cam 3 has secured thereto the strip 7 of spring steel abutting on the ends 5<a> so as to tend to disengage the strip 5 from the drum 1. A bight formed in the strip 7 straddles a stop 6. The bight may instead be formed in the brake strip 5 the spring 7 being in this case in two parts secured one on each side of the bight. A spiral spring may be interposed between the upper part of the bight and the stop 6.
