Abstract

223,904. Engel & Biermeyer. Oct. 22, 1923, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Clutches, claw; operating clutches.-In double rotary key clutches for forging, punching, and pressing machines &c., the segmental keys are carried by the driving-member and engage external notches in a sleeve on the driven shaft. The controlling-means are arranged for engaging the clutch in either direction of rotation and for disengaging it at any point in the revolution. Oppositely-acting keys 4 carried by the driving- member 1 are adapted to be turned simultaneously by springs 20 into notches 5 in a sleeve 3 keyed to the driven shaft 2. A strong spring 19 acts through mechanism housed in the space 9 and comprising toggle links 11, arms 10, and lostmotion couplings 33 to hold the keys normally out of engagement. A loose gear-wheel 17, meshing with a pinion 16 on a spindle 15, can be manually coupled to the stationary shaft 2 by a clutch 18, whereby an arm 14 on the spindle 15 is rotated, so straightening the toggle through a link 13 and allowing the keys 4 to engage the sleeve 3. This action is independent of the direction of rotation of the member 1. As soon as the shaft 2 revolves, rotation of the parts 14 - - 16 ceases. The clutch 18 may be disengaged by a cam or tappet acting through the lever 30 at the end of one revolution, or manually disengaged at any time, the spring 19 then restoring the parts to disengage the main clutch.
