414,739. Automatic electromagnetic regulators ; supply systems. FERRANTI, Ltd., and PORTER, G. L., Hollinwood, Lancashire. Nov. 12, 1932, No. 32074. [Class 38 (iv).] Boosting by static transformers.-An automatic tail-end booster comprises a boosting transformer, a winding g of which is in series with the line, the primary winding h being connected at one end to one of the mains e and at the other end to a reactor f, preferably at its mid-point, the ends of the reactor being connectible, one to each of the mains, by mercury tube type switches bl, b2, the solenoids s<1>, s<2> of which are connected in series with the load and operate at different current intensities. With the switch bl open and switch b<2> closed no boost is obtained. With increasing line current switch bl is closed and half-boost is obtained. With further rise in current switch b<2> opened and full boost is obtained. In unbalanced polyphase systems each line is provided with a booster and each of the solenoids s<1>, s<2> has two coils connected in series in the line and neutral wires respectively. In a balanced three wire single phase system, the booster transformer may be provided with two similar secondaries g connected, one in each of the outers, the neutral being ignored.
