Convention date, Oct. 5, 1931. [Class 7 (vi).] A spring-closed valve automatically controlling the flow of air to an internalcombustion engine, and provided with means for varying the force required to open the valve which are adjusted without overcoming the force exerted by the closing- spring, comprises a valve member 5, Fig. 2, which is more or less moved upwards into the wall 1 of its casing by the action of the adjusting-device 4b connected to a movable abutment 8 of the loading-spring 6. The valve slides upon the upper part 4<a> of the stem and carries an abutment 7 for the other end of the spring 6, the abutment 8 constituting a balancing-piston for the valve. Fig. 3 shows another form in which the valve seat 5<a> slides in the casing 1, being connected to the adjusting-means by a pin 16, light spring 17, and stem 4b slotted at its upper end 20 where it engages the pin 16. According to the downward pull exerted on the pin 16 through the stem 4b and spring 17, the amount by which the seating follows the downward movement of the valve 5 is varied. In a modification, the stem 4b is connected directly to the pin 16 and the seating 5<a> slides over the periphery of the valve 5.
