Abstract

409,439. Back - pedalling brake and free-wheel arrangements. MULLER, E., 23, Elisabethstrasse, Spandau, Berlin. Dec. 7, 1932, No. 34720. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1931. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 19, 1933.] [Class 136 (ii).] Free-wheel and back-pedalling brake mechanism comprises a driving wheel and a driven wheel, a braking surface on the driven wheel, independent braking and clutching means freely mounted between the driving wheel and the braking surface, and control means on the driving wheel adapted to act selectively upon the clutching means to produce a driving connection between the driving and driven wheels, or upon the braking means to produce a braking action, the control means acting directly upon the braking and clutching means. A sprocket wheel 4 is provided with inwardlyprojecting lugs or cams 15, 15<1> for controlling a clutch member 3 and brake members or shoes 2, which are freely mounted around an inner member 1, provided with wedge-shaped &c. braking parts 8 and fixed to the wheel hub by means of an oval recess 19 adapted to fit on to the similarly-shaped end of the hub. In forward driving, each lug 15<1> moves between inclined faces on lugs 12, 12<1>, Figs. 4 and 7, on the clutch member 3, which is thus moved laterally by the lug 12 to effect engagement of teeth 9 with teeth 9<1> on the member 1 to drive the latter. On free-wheeling, the lug 15<1> engages the lug 12<1> to disengage the teeth 9, 91. On back-pedalling, each lug or cam 15 forces a roller 7 inwards through an opening 14, Fig. 7, in the clutch member 3, so as to press the brake shoes 2 on to the part 8 of the member 1. The brake shoes 2 are acted upon by a retractive resilient steel ring 30, Fig. 2. In order to anchor the brake shoes 2 when the brake is applied, laterally-projecting lugs on the shoes are adapted to engage projections 13 on a ring 5 to which is fixed one end of an arm, the other end of which is clipped &c. to the cycle frame. The braking-surfaces may be lubricated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 410,450. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
