475,956. Steering bath chairs and other vehicles. ETABLISSEMENTS DEVILLAINE FRERES. Feb. 24, 1936, No. 5552. Void. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1935. [Classes 79 (ii) and 136 (i)] A bath chair,toy, or other vehicle is steered by disconnecting the drive to a wheel on either side of the vehicle and applying a brake to the disconnected wheel, the clutches and brakes being controlled by a steering wheel or the like. In the construction shown applied to a vehicle having a castor wheel 2 and driving wheels 4, 5 driven by pedal gear 21, 22 and a driving shaft 9, each driving wheel is normally connected to the shaft 9 by a slidable clutch member 8 forced into engagement with a member 6 on the wheel by a spring 16. The clutches are disengaged by means of shafts 11 having cams 12 engaging rollers 13 on clutch levers 14 pivoted at 15. Each shaft 11 has an operating arm 18 and a short arm 10 connected to a brake band 7 on the wheel member 6. The arms 18 are connected to cables 19, 20 attached to drums 24, 25 loose on the steering shaft 26, each drum having a pin 28 or 29 adapted to be engaged by a lug 27 on the shaft. When the steering shaft is rotated in either direction the lug 27 bears against one of the pins 28, 29, thus rotating the corresponding drum and pulling one of the cables to disengage the clutch and apply the brake on one side of the vehicle to steer the vehicle to that side.
