Abstract

406,502. Turning - gear. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., Cranford Lane, Hayes, Middlesex, and FORSYTH, A. G., Venlaw, Burdon Lane, Cheam, Surrey. April 13, 1933, No. 11162. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter in which a worm wheel a on the engine shaft is driven through a worm c moved axially on a spindle b by a lever k, which closes different electric circuits whereby the worm is first rotated slowly to engage with the wheel and then at such speed as to enable the engine to be started, the movement of the worm is effected through intermediate means which are reset automatically before the completion of the travel of the lever k. As shown, the spindle b is driven from an electric motor d through a pinion e engaging a toothed rim f carried by a pair of plates g, which rotate on a ratchet bush h keyed to the spindle band carry pawls j in engagement with the ratchet bush. The lever k has buttress teeth n spring- held in engagement with similar teeth on a star-wheel o. A spring-controlled plunger p is interposed between the star-wheel and a lever q bearing against the end of the worm c. Movement of the lever k to the left moves the worm c into engagement with the wheel a. A contact r on the lever k first bridges contacts s, t and afterwards contacts t, u, so that the motor d is first connected to a low-voltage part of the battery and then to a high-voltage part at the end of the stroke of the lever, the point of the star-wheel passes the end of the plunger p which, with the lever q, returns to the initial set position. The lever k may be returned to its initial position by a spring. The contacts s, t, u may be connected to separate batteries of different voltage or the lever k may be the movable element of a rheostat in the circuit of a single battery.
