Abstract

Timing.-In a starting-device in which a ratchet-wheel R on the engine shaft is actuated by a pawl P pivoted on a lever connected by a link L to an arm SL on a rocking-shaft carrying a starting-lever the small end of the pawl lever engages a lever M connected to an ignition timing-device CB, so that the ignition is advanced when the starting-device is in the normal position shown. The arm of the timing- device is movable between stops W. V, and a spring Z moves it into the retarded position on the actuation of the starting device. A spring such as Y mounted on the link L or on a stationary member, may be arranged to act on the pawl P only when the starting-gear is near the initial position, so that if the starter is not properly in the initial position, the pawl is in contact with the ratchet wheel and gives an audible warning that the spark is retarded.
