Abstract

185,423. Neighbour, A. G. L. Sept. 3 1921, [Convention date]. Inductor machines.-In a magneto of the rotary armature type wherein an angularly-displaceable pole-sleeve is adapted to be moved against the action of a spring and then released so as to bE returned by the spring rapidly to its initial posi. tion, to produce a strong spark when starting ar engine, the release of the pole-sleeve is effected by means of a fixed stop mounted on the body casting of the magneto. The auxiliary pole-pieces which are preferably laminated are carried by the pole-sleeve 15 to which are secured end plates or caps 17, 24. A helical spring 38 is located in a chamber 37 and bears at one end upon an abutment 39 fixed to a pin 40 in the casting 1C and at the other end against an abutment 41 secured to the cap 17. When the armature rotates slowly a ratchet tooth 47 on a disc 4E carried by the armature shaft 22 engages with a pawl 46 on a lever 45 secured to the cap 17. The cap 17 rotates with the shaft 22 until the projection 50 on the lever 45 engages with the fixed stop 49 thereby releasing the pawl 46 and allowing the spring 38 to return the sleeve 15 rapidly to its normal position. A lever 52 on one end of which presses a spring 55 is adapted to hold the pawl 46 away from the disc 48 when the engine has started. By means of a Bowden wire the pawl 46 may be brought into the operative position when desired. In an alternative arrangement for holding the pawl 46 out of action, a locking-lever is provided which forms a seating for one end of a leaf spring the other end of which bears against the projection 50. In another arrangement which is automatically caused to function at starting and to become inoperative at a certain speed, two flyweights 72, Fig. 6, are provided. At starting these engage with a pawl 46. On attaining a certain speed the weighted ends of the flyweights move outwards so that the ends 73 no longer engage with the pawl 46. In a further modification, the sleeve 15 is moved independently of the shaft 22, and while the engine is stationary, by means of a pawl engaging in a notch in the cap 17 and actuated manually through a rod or the like. In all the arrangements described, provision is made for altering the position of the different parts of the actuating mechanism to allow of rotation in the opposite direction. The end plate 24 carries the cam ring 31 for the circuit breaker 29. A non-rigid connection is provided between the timing lever 85 and the sleeve 15 so that the pawl 46 is able to move the sleeve 15 independently of the timing-lever.
