Abstract

286,339. Jensen, N. C. F. Nov. 4, 1926. Igniters combined with cigarette delivery apparatus; lighting cigars and the like by electric devices.-In a machine in which cigarettes are fed one at a time from a magazine into position between a hot point at one end and a draughtapplying device at the other end for ignition before delivery, the selected cigarette is subjected during the ignition period to endwise spring pressure released automatically by actuation of the machine but irrespective of the actuating force applied to the machine. In one form, the turning of a knob 9, Fig. 2, closes a switch 19 in the circuit of an electric igniter, carried by a piston 7, and rotates a toothed wheel 20 and a disc 27 with a claw 28, which operates a spring-pressed lever 29 and a link 30 to rock the spindle 5 of a selector device 4 and so feed a cigarette from a magazine 1 to a cradle 6. When the claw 28 engages the spindle 27<a>, the lever 29 is released and returns the device 4. The spindle of the lever 29 is provided with lugs 48 for jogging the cigarettes in the magazine. A cam 18, movable with the knob 9, moves a spring-controlled rod 15 away from a projection 11 on the piston 7, which is then pressed forward by a spring 7a and thrusts the cigarette against a nozzle 45 communicating with bellows 8. The end plates 42 of the latter are connected by bars 38 to rods on a crank-disc integral with a toothed wheel 36 in mesh with a toothed wheel 35 on the cradle 6 so that, when a crank handle 10 is operated to invert the cradle, the bellows 8 draw air through the cigarette immediately before delivery to a tray 52. A cam 25 on the cradle releases a pawl 21 from the wheel 20, which is then returned by a spring, and the piston 7 is retracted by the projection 11 engaging a cam 13. When used on a motor vehicle, the suction of the engine may be used to apply the draught through a conduit 46. The cradle and piston are provided with ventilation apertures. In a second form, the cradle 6, Fig. 13, is turned through gear-wheels 54, 55 by a handle 53 to effect delivery. A hub 68 on the cradle is formed with cams, arranged to rock a spring pressed wall 73 of the magazine for jogging the cigarettes and to operate a slidable plate 75 engaging pawls 76 on the spring-controlled spindles 77 of selector dogs 78, one of the cams engaging the foot 79 of the plate 75 to limit the movement of the cradle. The draught-applying piston 57 turns wtih the cradle and, after being retracted by a fixed cam 60, is advanced by a spring 58 and thrusts the cigarette against an igniting filament mounted on a spring-pressed mica disc in a cylinder 82. The switch comprises a metal disc 86, keyed to the cradle and having an inset insulation piece 87 on which a spring contact 88 normally rests. The disc 86 and cylinder 82 are enclosed in a casing 89 having a lug provided with two apertures communicating respectively with a tube 63 in the piston 57 and the intake manifold of the engine, a groove 94 in the disc being arranged to connect the apertures when the cradle is rotated. The handle 53 is pushed back, or released for return under the action of a spring, to deliver the cigarette to the tray 52 and return the parts to the normal position. The tube 63 fits loosely in the piston stem 62 or grooves are provided in the adjacent faces of the parts to provide a byepass for additional air when the draught is excessive and to prevent the accumulation of nicotine. In a modification, the cradle 6, Fig. 32, is provided with a projection 59, which rides along cam members 104, 105 and is adapted to lift the member 104 so as to rock a spring-controlled ledge 95 of the magazine and to actuate a pivoted selector flap 98.
