Abstract

210,738. Eclipse Machine Co., (Assignees of McGrath, W. L.). Feb. 3, 1923, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-An electric starter, arranged to be moved by a hand-laver or pedal into engagement with an engine member and to be disengaged automatically, comprises a pinion 14 mounted on a screw-threaded sleeve 8 slidable on splines 9 on the shaft 2 of the motor 1, a torsion spring 36 being secured to the pinion and to a head 12 on the sleeve 8. The sleeve is moved along the shaft 2, to bring the pinion 14 into engagement with the engine member 15, by means of a plunger 29 acting through a bell-crank lever 30, a rod 31, and a forked lever 32 engaging the head 12, a spring 35 being interposed between the lever 32 and a stop 36 on the rod 31. Springs 33, 34 normally retain the parts in the disengaged position. The lever 30 also serves to actuate the switch 4 of the motor 1. When the engine starts, the pinion 14 is returned automatically on the sleeve 8 to the position shown in Fig. 3 and is held by a pivoted catch 16 actuated by a spring 20 and engaging a groove 23 in the pinion. When the parts are returned to the initial position on the release of the plunger 29, the catch 16 is withdrawn into a slot 17 in the sleeve 8 by engagement with the surface 24 of a sleeve 6 pinned to the shaft 2. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 209,390.
