Abstract

309,117. Eclipse Machine Co., (Assignees of Whitney, M. P.). April 5, 1928, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-In an electric starter in which a driving member or pinion 11 is carried by a rotatable and longitudinally shiftable screw member 22, positioning means is provided for retaining the driving member 11 at the forward end of the screw member 22 when the latter is retracted from the engine fly-wheel 12, the positioning means being withdrawn from engagement with the driving member when the screw member is moved towards the fly-wheel. As shown in Fig. 1, the screw member 22 is moved axially on the splined shaft 21 of the starting motor 10 by means of a yoke 33 on a shifter 30 sliding on a guide rod 31, its movement being limited by a pin-and-slot connection 36. A head 44 also sliding on the rod 31 is connected by a link 45 to an operating pedal 14. The parts are normally held in the positions shown by springs 37, 46, and the pinion 11 is held at the forward end of the screw member 22 by a positioning member or yoke 26 pivoted at 41 on the shifter 30 and engaging between fingers 42 of a projection 43 on the head 44. On depressing the pedal 14, the initial movement of the head 44 closes the space 47 between it and the shifter 30 and moves the yoke 26 away from the pinion 11. The head 44, shifter 30, and screw member 22 then move aogether, bringing the pinion into mesh with the flywheel teeth, and an adjustable screw 16 on the pedal engages the push switch 17 of the motor 10. If the engine starts while the pedal is down, the pinion 11 is automatically screwed along the member 22 out of mesh with the flywheel. In a modification, the shifter and the actuating head rock on a pivot instead of sliding on a guide rod such as 31.
