Abstract
402,221. Change - speed gearing ; clutches. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., and WILSON, W., Longbridge Works, Northfield, Birmingham. Oct. 4, 1932, No. 27524. [Class 80 (ii).] In change-speed gearing suitable for vehicles comprising positive clutches, clutch teeth c, Fig. 3, on a loose gear C are brought to the approximate rotational speed of like teeth b on a splined clutch member B by prior frictional engagement with a split spring ring F. The ring F is in a groove E in the member B and is kept from turning by a pin G, Fig. 2. The wheel C has a projecting gallery D with a bell mouth H which coacts with the convex periphery of the ring F to yield a line contact from which oil is squeezed leaving metal-to-metal contact. Beyond a region of minimum diameter h, the surface d of the gallery D enlarges to a region h<2> which is clear of the ring F in the final engaged position of the clutch. More than one ring F may be used. The right hand end of the member B has a similar synchronized clutch for a different speed.
