Abstract
525,229. Positive clutches. BOSTOCK, F. J., and BOSTOCK & BRAMLEY, Ltd. Feb. 20, 1939, No. 5530. [Class 80 (ii)] A gear wheel 1 rotatable and slidable on a shaft 2 has dogs 4 adapted to engage dogs 3 rigid with the shaft 2 after the two sets of dogs have been brought to about the same speed. For this purpose a synchronizing ring 5 is located between the dogs 3 and 4 and has a coned surface 11 which is maintained in continuous frictional contact with a similar surface 7 on the wheel 1 by a spring 12. The ring is formed with resisting surfaces 9 which, unless the speeds of the two sets of dogs are about the same, foul faces 3a of the dogs 3 and thus prevent engagement. On the faces of the surfaces 9 are formed stops 8 which limit the amount of rotational movement of the ring relative to the shaft. The surfaces 9 have slots 10 which, when synchronization occurs, allow the ring to pass into the space formed by the dogs 3. The drawing shows the parts moved asunder from their actual working positions.
