401,144. Variable speed gearing. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London.-(Assignees of Deutsche Babcock & Wilcox Dampfkessel- Werke Akt.-Ges. ; Oberhausen, Germany.) Feb. 6, 1933, No. 3631. Convention date, Feb. 6, 1932. [Class 80 (ii).] Continuously variable-speed epicyclic gearing, more particularly for driving mechanical grates, comprises a constant-speed electro-motor 1 driving through a worm 11, one element 13 of the bevel epicyclic gearing, and, through an expanding-pulley belt-drive 7 arranged on the side of the worm 11 remote from the motor 1, driving a parallel shaft carrying a worm 12 driving another element 14 of the epicyclic gear, the planet-carrier 18 of the gear being secured to a final driven shaft 15, on which the bevels 13, 14 are freely mounted. The worms 11, 12 and their worm-wheels associated with the bevel wheels 13, 14 may be of the same or opposite hands and preferably have teeth which differ in number. The expanding-pulley gear is varied through levers 19 by a hand-wheel 24. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the expanding-pulley drive may be replaced by a separate variablespeed motor directly driving the shaft of the worm 12 and provided with a flanged mounting similar to that of the motor 1 and arranged on the same side of the casing as this motor. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
