Abstract
398,379. Vehicle wheels. SCHULTE, G., Meinerzhagen, Westphalia, Germany. Dec. 28, 1932, No. 36689. Convention date, March 2. [Class 144 (i).] The rim and spokes of a metal wheel consist of closed hollow bodies which are made easily detachable by the provision on the spokes of conical shoulders which engage with correspondingly-shaped cups in the inner rim wall. As shown in side elevation by Fig. 1, and in diametral section by Fig. 2, the rim a consists of a continuous hollow body and the spokes c are made of two channel-shaped elements welded together and shaped to produce a boxformation c<3> at the inner ends and conical shoulders and pins c<4> at the outer ends. The wheel hub e has a spoke flange f with holes for accommodating bolts g which also pass through apertures in a loose disc h and in the ends of the spokes. In assembly, the spoke-pins c<4> are placed in the rim-apertures with a soft metal washer interposed the ends c<3> of the spokes being placed one on the other. The hub e is then loosely inserted at the central aperture, the loose disc h positioned, and the bolts g tightened. Washers m may be interposed between the spokes c and hub e. The removal of a single spoke for replacement can be effected bv removal of the loose disc h and of the bolt g holding the spoke to be removed. The inner ends of the spokes and the engaging surface of the hub may be tapered so that when a spoke is driven into position a tightening in the radial direction is effected. A dished wheel can be constructed, as shown in Fig. 7, by providing the flange f and disc h with opposite surfaces inclined to the hub axis and by giving the hub a corresponding taper.
