Abstract

Detaching frnm, and attaching to, permanent hubs; disc wheels.- Wheels for vehicles are provided with means in combination whereby the body of the wheel may be detachably secured to the hub, the rim may be detachably secured to the wheel body, and the tyre may be detachably secured to the rim by a part of the latter which is removable. Fig. 4 illustrates one embodiment of the invention as applied to a disc wheel. The disc 8 is dished and provided with a flat central area 13 which is reinforced by inner and outer plates 14, 15 connected together by swaging the inner periphery of the plate 14 over the outer plate 15 as at 16. The means for detachably securing the wheel to the hub consists of bolts 4 and nuts 9. The bolts are permanently attached to the hub flange by nuts 6 and by upsetting their inner ends. The bolt holes through the wheel are larger than the bolts, and the nuts 9 have sleeve extensions 10 entering the annular spaces thus provided with the object of obtaining a locking action on the nuts during the driving of the wheel. The outer periphery of the disc is flanged. and provided with two seatings 17, 18 of different diameters for a rim 24 with two inwardly extending ribs 25, 26. The means for detachably securing the rim consist of screw bolts 20 which work obliquely through blocks 21 secured in the angle between the main part of the discs and its peripheral flange. The ends of the bolts are adapted to bear on the outer face of the rib 25 for holding the rim in position, and to be withdrawn sufficiently to allow the rim to be removed, a stop ring 23 being mounted on the bolts to prevent complete withdraws). With the obiect of damping vibration in the disc, an odd number of blocks 21 is preferably employed and in addition an odd number of bolts may be used at the hub. The valve stem is mounted in a sleeve 31, Fig. 5. riveted to the rim and adapted to communicate the drive thereto and enable removal of the rim to be effected without dismantling the valve. The tyre is detachably secured to the rim by a split flange 28 seated in a groove formed in the rib 26, The flange is stepped at 29 and held against accidental disengagement by the pressure of the tvre. The invention is also described as applied to a wheel with wood spokes and felloe.
