Nov. 12, 1931, No. 31361. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 103 (i).] The friction surface or the whole of a friction member for use in brakes and clutches and comprising, for example, a brake-drum or brakeshoe, is formed of austenitic or stainless steel capable of hardening by cold working, the stainless steel preferably containing 8 per cent nickel'and 18 per cent chromium. The brake drum shown is formed by welding a braking flange 12<1> of the steel to a flange 13 on a drumhead 11 of inferior metal. In a modification a liner of the steel is secured by swaging within a brake drum of inferior metal. Curves are shown illustrating the degree of wear in brake drums having liners of stainless steel, low carbon steel, and cast iron.
