Abstract
410,840. Brake drums. BUDD WHEEL CO., 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Eksergian, C. L. ; 12141, Charlevoix Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Oct. 25, 1932, No. 29841. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1931. [Class 103 (i).] A brake-drum has one annular end secured to or integral with a mounting flange which restricts its radial expansion and contraction to a substantial degree, and its other annular end free of such mounting, the portion of the drum at or in proximity to its free end being provided with a rib especially dimensioned so as to make the rigidities of the annular ends of the drum substantially equal. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the pressedmetal back-plate 10 of the drum is welded to an L-shaped pressed-metal ring 13 cast integrally in the thickened end 16 of the braking annulus 14, the cast metal flowing into dovetailed grooves on the periphery of the ring. A rib 17, dimensions of which are given by way of example, is provided so as to make the rigidity of the free end of the drum substantially equal to that of the end 16. When heated under braking friction the drum curves outwardly due to its central portion being less rigid than its extremities, so that the flat surface of the brake-shoe when applied to the drum contacts first at the drum extremities, as shown in Fig. 6, and then under increasing pressure curves into close contact with the whole of the braking surface. In a modified construction the drum has three ribs 22, 23, Fig. 4, dimensions of the rib 22 being given by way of example. In a second modification the back-plate 10 is curved outwardly at 19, Fig. 3, and fits tightly within a ring 20.
