387,933. Brake drums. BUDD WHEEL CO., 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Eksergian, C. L.; 12141, Charlevoix Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) July 27,1932, No. 21195. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1931. [Class 103 (i).] In order to prevent a brake drum from assuming a conical form under the influence of the braking pressure, the back-plate or support by which it is carried at one of its edges is made resilient in a radial direction. As shown, the drum proper 15 is cast on to the flange of a backplate 10 which tapers in thickness radially and which is curved as at 13 so as to permit the inner edge of the drum to expand under the braking pressure equally with the outer unsupported edge. Radial slits may be formed in the curved part 13 to increase the radial resiliency of the plate. The flange of the plate has dovetail slots or notches which are filled by the metal of the drum in casting so that the drum is securely attached to the plate. The drum may be of rolled channel section and the curved backplate be welded to one of the flanges of the drum. Or the drum may be a cast metal ring and the back-plate be welded to a flange thereof, sheet metal inserts being cast at intervals around the flange to facilitate the welding operation. The drum and back-plate may instead be formed as a single stamping.
