6 Claims. (on. 188-213) This invention relates to brakes, and is illustrated as embodied in brake drums having liners cast therein and constructed to cooperate with a backing plate to keep water and dirt out of the brake.
The seal desired, between the drum and backing plate, is inpart achieved by flaring the drum and forming the'backing plate with a flange gen erally edge to edge with respect to the flared part of the drum, and arranging theiiner to extend and bridge across the joint so formed, to
give a} hailie: effect. Preferably the space so provided between the liner and the flange on the backing plate-is utilized by providing an external rib on the liner, thus giving anadditional bame continued as a flaredportion Id whichin'turn is 30 integral with a cylindrical edge portion Id of larger diameter than'the'flange I2. The drum is preierablypreased from sheet steel.
Seated within the flange l2, and welded or otherwise thereto, is a sheet-steel ring 35 iahavingaflangeidseatedagainst (andifdesired spot welded or otherwise secured to) the head. or the drum, and which carries cast iron material 22 preferably .centrifugaily cast therein. The ring I! and cast iron 22 form a liner which 4 istheactualfrictionpartoithe drum. Theliner extends beyond the edge portion IQ of the drum, and is preferably there provided with a rib 24 formed in the ring ll and into which the cast iron 22 extends.
45 The drum is, when in use, associated with a backing plate or the like 26 having a peripheral flange 2 8 which extends across the rib 24 and is events have been described in detail, it is not my intention to limit the scope of the invention to those embodiments, or otherwise than by the terms of the appended claims. The present application is a division of my application No. 657,693, flied February 26),
I claim:
1. A brake comprising a drum having agenerallycylindrical outer flange, a backing plate at the open side -of the having a. flange of the same diameter'as the edge of the drum flange and projecting toward and arranged substantialiy edge to edge with respect to the drum flange, and a liner secured in thedrum flange and provided with the braking surface of the drum and bridging across the annular joint between the two flanges.
2. A brake drum having a. generally clyindrical outer flange terminating in an outwardly-flared extension, and a liner secured in the-drum flange and-provided. with the braking surface or the drum and having an external rib beyond the edge of said flange, said extension having a greater total diameter than said rib. V
3. A brake drum having an external cylindrical flan'gecontinued as a flaring portion of greater diameter than said flange. and a liner fitting 'within and secured to said flange and continued beyond the edge of said flaring portion and which is unsupported by said flaring portion.
4. A brake drum havingan external cylindrical flange continued as a flaring portion of greater diameter than said flange, and a liner fitting within and secured to said flange and continued beyond the edge of said flaring portion and which is unsupported by said flaring portion, and which has an external rib of le diameter than said flaring portion.
' 5. A brake drum having an external cylindrical flange continued as a flaring portion of greater diameter than said flange, and a liner fltting within and secured to said flange and continued beyond the edge of said flaring portion and which is unsupported by said flaring portion, and which comprises a steel ring having iron cast on its inner face.
6. A brake drum having an external cylindrical flange continued as a flaring portion of greater diameter than said flange, and a. liner fitting within and secured to said flange and continued beyond the edge of said flaring portion and which is unsupported by said flaring portion, and which comprises a steel-ring having iron cast on its .inner face and extending into said rib.
