Abstract
634,744. Vehicle wheels. CROMPTON PARKINSON, Ltd. Aug. 8, 1947, No. 22019. Convention date, May 25, 1940. [Class 144 (i)] A resilient wheel, particularly for railway vehicles, comprises a pair of flanges carried by the hub (or rim) and spaced from a floating disc carried by the rim (or hub) by rubber &c. cushion-rings which act in shear under load and torque stresses. The outer pair of flanges are connected by transverse bolts passing through clearance holes in the other disc and having their median portions of reduced thickness to provide flexibility in use. In the form shown in Fig. 2, rubber cushions 9, 16, with metal facings 10, 11 and 16, 17 respectively are secured in compression between a flange 8 projecting from the rim 7 and flanges 3, 5 projecting from the hub 1. The inner flange 3 is welded to the hub and the outer flange 5 detachably secured by bolts 6. The peripheral portions of the flanges 3, 5 are connected by tie-bolts 20 having reduced portions 34 in the region of clearance holes 31 in the flange 8. The inner end 21 of each bolt is threaded into the flange 3, up to a shoulder 22, the outer flange 5 being clamped between a shoulder 26 on the bolt and nut 28.
