Abstract

582,742. Vehicle wheels; axles. MORGAN, C. O. B.' April 27, 1944, No. 7906. [Class 144 (i)] [Also in Group XXXII] Wheels for railway and other vehicles are constructed without a tubular hub member, the axle being bolted &c. directly to the side or sides of the wheel. Fig 1 shows a railway disc wheel 3 having a solid centre 1 of reduced thickness which is bolted between the flanged ends of the axle 5 and journal 7. Alternatively, the flanged ends of the axle and journal may be recessed to house a thickened wheel centre. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the flanged journal is replaced by a washer plate 8A. As indicated in this figure, the bolt attachment means may be supplemented by welds 12. Fig. 14 shows a road wheel comprising a solid wood hub adapted for attachment to the flanged axle journal 7, as in Fig. 7.
