Abstract

562,542. Locomotives. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. June 1, 1942, No. 7427. Convention date, May 12, 1941. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (iii)] In a locomotive or like rail vehicle having independently-driven axles 3, 4 in at least two bogies 5, 6, the bogies also having non-driving axles 16, 17, the tractive effort is transmitted from the bogies to the main frame 1 by means of the bogie pivots at such a height h<1> that variations in the loads on the driving wheels due to the tractive effort are automatically compensated or cancelled. In the arrangement shown, the height h<1> is determined by the equation where Z is the total tractive effort from all the driving motors, Z2 the effort from the motors on the bogies, aa the distance from each bogie pivot to the axis of the non-driving wheels, h the height of the drawbar above the rail level, and L the distance between,the bogie pivots. The main frame may have driving axles 2 connected by equalizing levers 15. The bogie motors are preferably mounted on the bogies but may be mounted on the main frame.
