Abstract

564,636. Wheels for vehicles. BOWER, W. Dec. 28, 1942, Nos. 18419/42 and 2915/43. [Class 144 (i)] Sprags or strakes 20, Figs. 1 and 2, extending through slots in the rim and alternately inclined to either side of the wheel are adjustably secured by bolts 21 to carrier plates 18 welded to the rim and to struts 17 which are welded to the rim and to the spokes 12, 13. The carrier plates are additionally supported by plates 19 welded thereto and to the struts. The strakes may be withdrawn within the rim when not required, and may be disposed with their bottom edges inclined to the horizontal to present their points to the ground. The plate 18 has a series of holes 24 to receive a steady pin 25 on the strake. In'the case of a wheel having an inner ring member 32, Fig. 5, with eyed lugs 33, 34 for attachment to an axle hub, the carrier plates 30 may serve as non-radial spokes welded to the rim and to the ring, and plates 35 may be welded to the carrier plates and inner ring and rim to stiffen the wheel. The bolts 21 or the nuts may be fixed in place by welding.
